Providenciales’ Thursday night Fish Fry

One of the most enjoyable aspects of visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands is getting to know the tastes of Providenciales (Provo). Provo features a weekly special event that is sure to enliven your taste buds.  During most of the year, each Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., there is a fish fry. This event is held at the Bight Children’s Park. Be sure to bring all your travel companions and a hearty appetite to this favorite weekly event.

About the Thursday Night Fish Fry

Every Thursday afternoon and evening, over a dozen local food vendors, entertainers and musical bands come together for the Turks and Caicos Islands Fish Fry. This event allows you to enjoy fresh, locally caught lobster, crab and fish. Each vendor uses his or her own special recipe, which gives you countless options.

If you like your seafood a little spicy, try the jerk seasoning or have the cooks add some cayenne pepper. You will also find plenty of delectable side dishes, including plantains, biscuits, fried potatoes, hush puppies, breaded and fried vegetables, and more. To quench your thirst, you can try a variety of sweet teas, soft drinks and adult beverages. Each vendor allows you the opportunity to customize your meal as you dine outdoors in the fresh, open air of the park.

What to Do at the Fish Fry

In addition to all of the fabulous foods that you can have for dinner at the fish fry, there are many other things to enjoy at this weekly Turks and Caicos event. Live music performed by local bands takes place all evening long. You can dance to the music as you wait for your dinner or dance for a while after eating. Dozens of arts and crafts vendors also set up among the food stands. You can browse for some fun souvenirs such as small dolls, pieces of jewelry, handbags, scarves and other fun accessories.

Take your time to talk with the artisans and learn more about how they make their wares. Some bargaining is typical while shopping at the markets of the fish fry, and you can expect to receive plenty of questions about how much you enjoyed your dinner. Entertainment such as dancing, singing and performance artistry also takes place throughout the evening. One week, there might be a juggler; the next week, you could be treated to a troupe of delightful dancers. Be sure to come every week of your vacation because each event is a new experience.

What to Wear

The Providenciales Thursday night fish fry is a casual event, so feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable. T-shirts, beach wraps and other comfortable attire are all welcome. Sandals are also welcome although you might prefer sturdier shoes if you plan to do a bit of dancing or are walking to and from the event.

If you like dressing up, you can wear a brightly colored shirt, an exquisite dress or your finest slacks; you’ll still fit right in with the crowd. Fresh flowers and brightly colored stone jewelry are common accessories to wear to the fish fry. Best of all, you will be able to engage in conversation with your travel companions or meet some new people as you enjoy this casual Turks and Caicos Islands dining experience.
