The Heart of Turks & Caicos: Island Charities

Sure, Provo is known for its gorgeous beaches, clear blue water, and colorful sea life, but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that Provo is is not just one of the most beautiful places in the world; she has a heart too.  Over the years, the good people of Provo have formed various charitable organizations, benefiting those most in need on the island.  As tourists, there are often ways you can get involved as well.
What better way of connecting with the family then volunteering  a few hours at a local charity?
TCSPCA– This is the one everyone becomes familiar with after their first trip to da Conch Shack and leaves with hopes of bringing one of the adorable pups back home.  Provo has many homeless dogs, affectionately known as “pot cakes,” which is the Bahamian term for leftovers in a pot after several preparations of a meal, essentially. Many are adopted or cared for by a community, but many are simply homeless.  TCSPCA is a non-profit organization that helps rescue animals in distress and provide basic needs to these homeless animals.  The goal is to ultimately seek permanent homes for these animals. There are many spay/neuter programs on island that visitors can also get involved with.

Provo Children’s House– This is a wonderful organization that provides a safe and loving home to orphans and children at-risk or in need of care.  They are always in need of supplies and volunteers (be aware there is a vetting process for all volunteers).  The children’s main needs are tutors and mentors, so people can visit for as little as 2 hours to help the children with homework or other needs.

Turks and Caicos National Trust– Fortunately, this organization exists in order to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the Turks and Caicos Islands.  Their mission is also to provide awareness of this heritage to future generations. This organization does great summer camps for children and also maintains the Turks and Caicos Heritage Sites, which include Cheshire Hall Plantation, Little Water Cay Iguana Sactuary, Wade’s Green Plantation, Bird Rock Point Nature Trail, and the Conch Bar Caves National Park. You can also support them by visiting these sites!

The Rotary Club of Providenciales meets Thursday at 7:00 at the Pelican Bay Restaurant, the stated purpose of the Rotary Club is: ” to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.”

The Providenciales Red Cross is one of the island’s main disaster relief organizations to respond to hurricanes and flooding from tropical storms. They are in constant need of donations and volunteers to sort emergency supplies.

The Kimanis Club “Serving the Children of the World.”  This organization focuses on child education and training.

If you’re looking for some way to make a difference on an island we all love, this should help get you started.
